THE LAUNCH- U all have been waiting for MOPP´S Portable Exhibtion

A PORTABLE EXHIBITION IN AN ENVELOPE

With our country in constant transition , its imperative to create platforms for development .

Khamissa Collective is an independent movement that came into being in 2004 .
As 15 independent photographers , we created a platform to showcase our photographic works.

" Through the use of our creative strategy and our collective resources we present an annual
photographic exhibition in Cape Town " Month of Peoples photography "

Our debut exhibition , which had no theme , was held on Green Market Square .
This square was once the creative heart of Cape Town.
Thus the ideal platform to celebrate the magic of photography .

In 2006 our "ghettogether " theme took us to district six .
We used this event to highlight the differences that separate us
and the similarities that connect us.

"I spy with my third eye" our 2007 theme was an underground exhibition
that attracted hoards of spectators , anxious and hungry for visual dialogue .

Our collective playing an active role in making the African Renaissance a working reality.

Social transformation , growth opportunities and empowerment are the key pillars
of our collective.

It is not necessarily the process of photography , but in essence about the opportunities
that's available and we as Africans taking a stand in affording others the opportunities
to showcase their photographic work.

Our collective is organic in nature , in its third year now we have finally secured funding to
produce our first catalogue , this catalogue is a retrospective of us as a collective .

Information is the legacy of photography .

Youth should understand the role the media plays
and the impact visual art has on their daily existence.
We have become complacent, we experience without analysis
this catalogue should be seen as a visual literacy tool.
Our view of the world is made of images.

Because photography has been so successful that
it has effectively exported our way of thinking .
We glance at a photograph as a complete frame of information.

Words will make a strong comeback over the next few years .
Photography being the stepping stone for spoken word ( poetry ) ,
story telling which could ultimately lead to performing arts
documentaries and film.

A whole generation does not read , in the culture of PS2 and the Internet ,
through photography vast information is instantly accessible, articulating the thought .

it is clear that the entire twentieth century art is centred around photography .
how we use this medium in the 21st century and
to what extent could our communities benefit from this art form?
